Top Marketer FAQ - What is Google AdSense?

By Cathy Henry
If you are beginning to explore ways of monetizing your website or blog you will most likely find recommendations to Google AdSense as a source of income. Many people have mixed feelings about placing advertising on their website and only you can decide if AdSense is right for your website or not.
Google AdSense is a type of contextual advertising. This means that the ads placed on your site will be relevant to your site content. It is also known as Pay Per Click advertising. Let me explain how this works.

You will have your choice of placing either text or image ads on your site and you can choose what size of ad you want to display and where you want it to appear within your site content. You will need to cut and paste some code into your website. If you are placing the ads on your blog, you can install a plugin that will manage the ad placement for you. All you will need to do is place your AdSense publisher ID in the settings of the plugin.

When a visitor to your site clicks on one of the Google ads, you will get paid. The amount you will get paid will vary from ad to ad and from day to day. Some clicks may pay as little as one cent while others will pay several dollars.

This may not seem like very much money, but when you consider that once the ad is placed on your site, your work is done. You would be driving traffic to your site anyway so it is easy money that can supplement your other income streams.

This type of advertising works very well for information or authority websites that have many pages of information. It will not likely pay well for a very small website or a landing page that may not have much content. Large community based websites and authority sites make large sums of money from Google AdSense raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars every month.

Smaller sites can make a few hundred dollars every month from displaying ads within their web pages and on their blogs. You may not get rich at it, but it may cover your website costs.
